Give it the 1 .. 2 .. 3: Circular Motion and Newton’s Laws

At The Physics Classroom, we try our best to provide a collection of varied resources on commonly-covered topics in Physics that meet the needs of students and teachers. You will find tutorials, animations, simulations, interactive questioning modules, lab ideas, reviews, curriculum and more. This offers teachers a one-stop site for finding learning resources that meet the unique needs and level of their students. Today we would like to recommend three of our favorite resources for learning and teaching the use of Newton’s Second Law to analyze the motion of objects in circles and along curved paths.

1. Tutorial Section – Applications of Circular Motion

Our Tutorial chapter on Circular Motion includes a three-page Lesson that discusses numerous applications of circular motion, with an emphasis on the application of mathematics to the topic.

2. Concept Builder- Forces and Free-Body Diagrams

Students are confronted with the challenge of identifying the free-body diagrams for situations involving the motion of objects in circles. A short verbal description of an object's motion us given. Students toggle through a set of free-body diagrams until they find the one that they thinking is the matching diagram for the description.

3. Calculator Pad – Circular and Gravitation

This set of 27 problems includes answers and audio-guided solutions. There is even a page devoted to the discussion of the physics formulas that are used to solve the problems.

These are just three of the many resources you will find on our website. You may also find the following useful: a Think Sheet in the Curriculum Corner section; a Science Reasoning activity; and Mission CG5 in Part 2 of Minds On Physics the App.
